Rabbit Holes: Making Life More Interesting (and Distracting)

joolieart

Welcome to my first blog post! It has taken a LOT of procrastination to get to this point. And I blame it on rabbit holes!

Those delightful diversions that pull us away from our initial intentions, often never to return to the original path – or to remember much later why we started the journey in the first place. And what journeys they can be! You can either deliciously embrace them for what they are or curse them for wasting your time.

Here are a couple of rabbit holes I've ventured down in the past month alone, not including a trip to Sydney to check out the vibrancy of the Vivid Festival and the Sydney Biennale with friends.

  • Creative Writing  Creative writing has never been my strong suit, but I put it on my list of 70 things to do before I turn 70. I thought it might help with writing blog posts, discussing my art, or sharing family history stories. While searching online, I came across Coursera’s course on writing your first novel. Me, write a novel? It’s not going well yet, but maybe check back later. I need constant encouragement. Coursera - Write Your First Novel

  • Domestika  Another creative writing project caught my eye on Domestika. Am I ready for all of this? It certainly stretches my comfort zone. Domestika - Creative Writing: Unlocking and Inspiring Ideas

  • The History of Trees and Timber in the Cooloola Region  This rabbit hole relates to my upcoming exhibition ‘Whisper in the Leaves’, where I've used banana fibre in my large 3m x 1m drops. I've been investigating the local banana boom, forestry history, colourful characters, and more. The key take out for me is to refine my search by time, area, people, and events. There’s so much to draw from and discover, making history both fascinating and sometimes misleading.

Detail of the pulp-painted banana fibre panels in progress for the ‘Whisper in the Leaves’ exhibition. This combines sisal, banana, water weed, and bladey grass, laid out on a 3m x 1m screen. Not sure where this is heading, but I’m not too worried either.

  • Creative Writing at the Local Library  I thought I'd see what our local library offers for creative writing and discovered they have a monthly meetup. I attended on the appropriate Friday only to find they had moved it to Thursday to stream the Sydney Writer’s Festival. I was fortunate to hear an interesting talk by English philosopher and author A.C. Grayling on "The Meaning of Life in a Technological Age." His main points were that four things have moved humanity: fire, writing, the printing press, and electricity. Think of all the wonderful things we enjoy because of electricity, like writing this blog.

  • Family History  This has the potential to be the biggest rabbit hole of all...

Where Is My Art in All of This?

It coexists with my newfound interests, adding richness to life. Never bored, never a dull moment. That could be the subject of the next blog—unless I discover more interesting rabbit holes!
